Workshop: 6 August 2008, Vineyard Hotel, Claremont, Cape Town
WATER AND WATER QUALITY IN THE MINERALS INDUSTRY
Water is a contentious issue in the mining industry. On the one hand, industry poses a threat to both the availability and quality of water, through competition for scarce resources and contamination by spills, dumps and tailings facilities. On the other hand, water poses a threat to the expansion of the industry, through increasing scarcity, escalating costs and more rigid legislation. This has led to an increased focus on the management of water in the mining industry. Operations are being forced to contend with a decrease in both the quantity and quality of water. This impacts on process efficiency as unit operations/circuits are required to operate with large internal recycles, at high solids concentrations and with poor quality process water. The aim of this workshop is to explore the effects of decreasing water quality and quantity on process efficiency in the mining industry. This includes identifying known problem areas, targeting those requiring further research and considering potential solutions to water issues, such as the use of novel process technologies and methods for water treatment.
